LAST DAYS OF LAST EDITION OF KINGDOM OF GREATER SYRIA
King Faisal leaves Syria July 1920 for United Kingdom after surrendering to French invaders the very same day they demanded he surrender. Before leaving for England King Faisal proclaims Omair Afzal Wahba king.
King Wahba supported the views of Yusuf al-Azma who had been King Faisal's minister of war and chief of staff and who wanted to fight the French invaders. King Wahba directed Yusuf to engage the French invaders which he did and died fighting them in the battle of Maysalun.
For Syrians Yusuf al-Azma is a national hero and an inspiration. His statue stands in a major square in central Damascus, with streets and schools named in his honor in cities all over Syria.
After death of Yusuf al-Azma King Wahba flees to U.S. where American immigration authorities did not spell his last name correctly. To understand how a mistake could have been made on spelling of his last name consider this example of how U.S. immigration worked in 1920. The U.S. immigration officer says to the Arab "Who are you?" and the Arab may say something like "I am Joseph the son of George." The immigration officer then says something like "O.K. your name is Joseph George. Now go stand in that line over there." Today there are thousands of Arab Americans with the last name George in the United States.
Today the grandson of King Wahba is attempting to start up the kingdom again. We seek support from all concerned about peace in Syria and our Iraqi province.
